Advantage of ‘MM’ size over ‘SWG’ in the manufacture and usage of Winding Wire
Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) is a part of the British System of measurement introduced by the Britishers in the year 1824. They abandoned it in 1970s and adopted Metric system, which has been prevailing almost all over the world (except three or four Nations).
IEC (International Electro-technical Commission) who formulates Standards , Specifications and Test procedures for Winding Wires, globally, have switched over to mm size and more recently Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have also adopted mm size for Winding wires. Wires manufactured in ‘ SWG ‘ does not qualify for certificate of recognition from BIS. Winding wire manufacturers, producing wires in ‘mm’ size can seek ISI mark from BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).
At National level in India, while medium and large Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of Electrical, Electronic and Tele-communication equipment have switched over to ‘mm’ size, the Small Equipment Manufacturers (SEMs) and almost all the rewinders /repairers are still continuing with ‘SWG’. However, at the International level, Winding wire manufacturers and its users in most of the countries have adopted ‘mm’ sizes.
